MARE171 Marine Biology-Diversity
Semester(s): Spring 2024, Fall 2024
Location: UH Hilo
This course explores a wide range of topics to the study of organisms’ and the marine environment. First, we will investigate the major habitats in the ocean through understanding the various defining features of each environment. Second, the structure, physiology, and ecology of major groups of organisms in the marine environment will be discussed, drawing broad trends that allow for adaptation in various habitats. Last, the course will explore the linkages among changing oceans and marine organisms with examples focused on local fauna and flora within the Hawaiian Island Chain, and targeted comparisons in ocean basins worldwide.
MARE264 and MARE365 QUEST
Semester(s): Summer 2024
Location: Keʻei, Hawaiʻi Island
QUEST is a field course offered through the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo that focuses on ecological monitoring of coral reefs using SCUBA. The course takes place during the last two weeks of May every year. Students will work from Halau Maluhia at Keʻei, south of Kealakekua Bay, for the duration of the course. Students involved in QUEST must be authorized as a University of Hawai`i Diver-in-Training (see application instructions), valid throughout QUEST. SCUBA tanks and sampling equipment will be provided, but students will need to provide their own basic equipment including dive and camping gear. QUEST is composed of two different courses, QUEST (MARE 264) and Advanced QUEST (MARE 364).
MARE265 Marine Ecology and Evolution
Semester(s): Spring 2024
Location: UH Hilo
This course covers the principles of ecology and evolution for Marine Science majors stressing integrative approach and recent advances. Topics include, but are not limited to evolutionary mechanisms, macroevolution, systematics, the origin of life, population and community ecology and ecological processes, marine communities, dispersal, biodiversity and biogeography.
